Could Shovel Knight be Joining Smash Bros?

With the recent reveal of Shovel Knight’s very own Amiibo figure, we ponder the likelihood of the eccentric indie icon popping up in everyone’s favourite brawler.

Fans of Smash will remember Nintendo’s special ballot program from earlier this year, which allowed fans to formally express directly to the company the characters they’d like to see as future DLC in Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Since day one Shovel Knight had been a top candidate among fan petitioners, likely for the fact the 8 bit aesthetic and game design of Yacht Club’s Shovel Knight felt like it came right out of Nintendo’s booming NES era from the mid-to-late ’80s.

The inclusion of Ryu from the wildly popular Street Fighter series announced during E3 2015 proved that Nintendo was serious when they pledged to include DLC characters from outside of their own licenses. It was a move on their part I previously cited as the reason why Nintendo is doing downloadable content tremendously, and adding another third party character – from a modern, indie studio, no less – would only solidify that sentiment.

And of course, Nintendo has been working hard to ensure many of their amiibo figures present multiple gaming opportunities in more than just one game. Although Shovel Knight’s amiibo reveal only shared details on its usage in Yacht Club’s original game, it would be awfully unlike any of Nintendo’s past motif to have a figure work in just a single game – let alone a third party game that they don’t claim 100% of sales revenue for.

So might we see Shovel Knight dig into Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS? It’s too soon to say for sure, but it would certainly seem like a missed opportunity to ignore one of the most memorable new gaming icons of the last few years. The Knight’s obvious influence from the games of Nintendo’s yesteryear, paired with his popularity on the Smash Bros. ballot and the element of “indie-cred” his inclusion would inevitably include, force us to believe that the Shield Knight loving hero might soon be squaring off with the likes of Link, Samus, and Robin.
